Greetings from Chicago!
I have been in Chicago for the past 6 days and needless to say its been an incredible trip so far. The weather improved tremendously and I’ve been enjoying my time here working and exploring. Last time I was here was in January 2014 and it was a nightmare due that the polar vortex at that time was hitting and my time to explore was limited and spent mostly inside hibernating from the cold.
One of my favorite things about Chicago is that they offer endless amount of restaurants and they are known for their food and pubs. The variety of food that Chicago offers is fascinating. This weekend I had the chance to try some elite and fine dining in Chicago, which I will review on the upcoming blog posts but Today, I will share with you all my experience at Portillos Hot Dogs, a well very known fast food restaurant in the Windy City.
Portillo’s was also voted #1 Street Food in Chicagoland.
The Main Entrance of the Facility.
Due that its Labor Day the restaurant was fairly calm because normally this place gets extremely crowded at all times of the day, so always keep that in mind when wanting to visit Portillos. Of course, there will be times thats its slower and not so busy but for the most part theres always consistent traffic coming in and out of the facility.
What to expect from Portillos and the food being offered:
- Hot Dogs (all kinds), Burgers, Fries, Pastas, Ribs, Salads.
- Soft Drinks & all sorts of Alcoholic beverages.
- Desserts of all types and specialty sundaes.

The Service was nothing impressive and didn’t “wow me” but its to be expected when visiting a fast food restaurant. The staff members are focused on taking the customers orders fast and get them on their way. They are attentive and friendly but nothing special. I would recommend to first make sure you know what you order before making the line as there will be a staff member on the line asking you if you are. They do this to avoid long wait for customers that know what they want and not having them “Wait”. The process was fast throughout the ordering process and the hot dogs were ready in 10 minutes max.

Here is an overview of the several ordering counters you can expect to see when visiting Portillos. At each counter you can select, order your meal/drinks.
There is plenty of sitting around the facility and it’s fairly big. The choice of yours. The upstairs sitting was my favorite location to sit because its quieter and not so hectic. You will be able to have a view of the City and the restaurant. If you would like to experience more of the restaurant vibe at peak hours, sitting on the first floor is also quite the experience. Both were enjoyable and comfortable.

The Hot Dogs – Overview
Two of the most popular hot dogs at Portillos are the Chili Cheese (you can add onion if you would like) and the Portillos Hot dog which is their signature hot dog. I decided to try their best 2 furthermore I made the request for one to be without onions. The hot dogs aren’t very big which is also a plus because a pet peeve of mine are big hot dogs. The first thing I noticed was the bread, different from other dogs and the taste of the hot dog was just perfect. The presentation and photo doesn’t do justice to how delicious this hot dog was. I left the building wanting MORE!! 😛
Bottom Line & Final thoughts
This is a must place to visit when in Chicago – The food was simply delicious and I truly enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. The facility is kept in great condition and very clean. Theres always staff walking around making sure the facility is kept in good / clean condition. As I mentioned above, I left the building wanting more. The Chili isn’t the typical chili you would have somewhere else, the chili was perfect and they added the Portillo’s signature touch with their own speciality. I am looking forward to visiting this venue once again and try more of their signature dishes. I highly recommend it for those visiting Chicago.
