As I have covered on previews blogs before – I am a big fan of selecting my meals right when I see my upgrades cleared. Last week I was on a rebooked scheduled to Boston. My original plans were to spend a few days in Boston and explore the City and get work done. As I was coming in from New York City after speaking and attending the New York Times Travel show, American Airlines notified me that my flight the next day to Boston was cancelled, to be expected. I was perfectly fine with that and I wasn’t freaking out. I cancelled my hotel, got my refund back and then I went on to the American Express centurion lounge to re-arrange my travels plans for this flight that was cancelled.
American Airlines was professional and the Executive Platinum Desk staffs were fantastic throughout the process of accommodating my request and finding the best flights that would work with what I was looking for. It took 5 minutes and I was well on my way to get this new ticket issued. The agent was fantastic, friendly and caring – I can guarantee she probably got 100+ calls with the same request as mine, so getting an agent that cheerful shows she truly loves her job and helping people. Kudos to her for what she did for me and how she handled my situation.
So this was how things ended up turning out.
Old flight: LAX-BOS-LAX
New flight ticketed: LAX-JFK-BOS-JFK-LAX
I was looking forward to flying one of my favorite aircraft which is American Airlines A321T, it sure beats flying direct on a 737 from LAX to BOS. If you haven’t seen my first look at the plane when I went to visit it at LAX before it began service, make sure you check out the following post for more info on the aircraft and what it offers. My upgrades for the flights cleared 4 days out from departure and I was able to select great seats for all of my flights, within 2 days of departure barely seats in premium cabin were left. I had priority on my flights with the upgrades as well due to how far in advanced I booked this flight, so thats always helpful. I went from Economy to Business class, if you are curious what the First Class service is like from New York to Los Angeles is on the A321T, make sure to check out this post.
Once my upgrades cleared I went ahead to pre-select my meals and get that out of the way. It saves work to the cabin crew as they already know what I want to eat, the only question you will get from them is “What would you like to drink with your meal sir?” 😉 easy peasy. You can pre-select your meals under your reservation, but keep in mind when it’s 24 hours before your flight, your entree reservation will not “stick” so make sure you do it a few days in advanced before your flight.
Meal selections can be found under reservation page – underneath your flight information.
Los Angeles to New York
New York to Los Angeles
When I saw the menu for the meals on board – Those were all brand new options that I haven’t had before so it’s great to see new food being added into the flights as well.
Moving on, the day of departure comes around and I was on an evening flight at 10:00pm from Los Angeles to New York. First class seemed to be full of dead heading flight attendants and non rev, compared to the Business Class with a few elites that got upgraded. The cabin crew working my cabin were friendly and attentive.
American Airlines A321T – Business Class seat (8D isle)
Here is where I failed at doing my job ;). Throughout this trip, I was battling a bad cold and eating was the last thing on my mind. There is nothing better than flying coast to coast on a lie flat seat at 37,000 feet in the air and thats exactly what I did shortly after take off. Reclined my seat, eye shades on, bose headphones on and off I went in. I woke up with 30 minutes until arrival in New York and of course, I skipped the meal – I wanted to try it but I was not feeling in the best condition to eat at the time. However, on my return flight from New York to Los Angeles I did try the dish I selected on my reservation.
Black and Bleu Salad, Seasonal greens and red skin potato wedges, bleu cheese, serviced with an optional black angus beef skewer.
- As my starter, I was served smoked salmon along with a red curry soup. The soup was super spicy and I am sensitive to spice so I was not able to eat it completely. The soup was poured on a coffee mug due to how bumpy the flight was and to avoid any messes, the cabin crew poured it on a coffee mug. The taste of the soup was not bad but the spice was over powering the flavor so I couldn’t really eat it. The salad and skewer were delicious though, I give it an A+ and highly recommend it.
I will be flying this route again in 6 days as I make my way to Athens, Greece and my routing will be as follow: LAX-JFK-LHR-ATH.
Have you flown this route before and what were your meals like?
