Many of you are familiar with Uber and how much of an impact uber has made within the transportation system all over the US and even Internationally. They also have a competitor which is Lyft which some people prefer to take lyft rather than Uber, though Lyft isn’t available in many of the International destinations I travel to, Uber is my number one choice when looking to get from point a to point b. So far, I have been able to take Uber in South Korea and Dubai and my experiences have been pleasant with the drivers. On Today’s Installment I will share with you my crazy Uber experience in Abu Dhabi and some important tips to keep in mind when requesting Uber in the Middle East.
One thing about Uber is that you are able to rate the driver on their performance and they also rate you as the passenger. I am a very easy going passenger and treat every single driver with respect and kindness. I understand it is not an easy job to be driving around for hours, sitting in traffic and from time to time dealing with passengers who aren’t super friendly so it tends to be a mix of good and bad experiences for the driver. During my time in Abu Dhabi I had a handful of good rides but one in particular was one that really bothered me and made my experience with Uber just awful, which had to be addressed to the higher up team so they could evaluate the situation so I would get the ride adjusted to what it should have cost me. So, this post will come in handy for some of you willing to use Uber in the Middle East, how to avoid any bad experiences and if you happen to run into one, you will also know what to do incase that happens.
It was Sunday morning in Abu Dhabi which is considered a work day in the Middle East – I had a business meeting at 11:00 in the morning at Ferrari World and at the time I was staying at The Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi which isn’t very far from Ferrari World, only a 20 minute ride and keep in mind there was no traffic as the highways were smooth and clear.
Requesting my Uber
Notice the red dot where it says “Unnamed Road” – When requesting the ride I selected “Ferrari World” and shortly after requesting it, it went directly to a street that was completely unnamed which was going to cause my driver to possibly get lost. Once I was picked up I mentioned to the driver that we are going to Ferrari World and he clearly stated “Of course sir, no problem”.
20 Minutes passes by and I start seeing signs for Ferrari World where clearly they can be seen from miles away, it is a big venue – intact it is one of the biggest theme parks in Abu Dhabi so it is hard to miss and so are the signs being posted all around the area. He takes a slight left clearly where he isn’t suppose to go and I kindly mentioned “Sir you are going the wrong way, I believe you were suppose to take a right” he then says, “No no, I know where I am going”. Fast forward, I am already 30 minutes deep into the ride and going on circles in random streets basically deserted. I then go ahead and tell the driver, “Sir this isn’t where I am suppose to be, go back where we were and take a right towards the park”, he once again says – No this is the way I am suppose to take towards the park, while we wait for the light to turn green, it all seemed very very strange to me and I started to lose my cool because there was nothing there and we weren’t even close to the park. The stop lights was broken, it wouldn’t switch and he finally realizes that he has to go another way otherwise we would have been sitting there for hours (literally). At the time I am already 30 minutes late for my meeting and mentioned, “Sir, listen to me please – you aren’t close to the park, take a right here, go straight, and then another right towards the park” and I said that on a strong tone so he could finally listen and take me where I needed to be, I look at the time and I am already 40 minutes into the ride where it should have been 20 minutes max. He finally proceeded with my instructions while the fare kept going up and keep in mind he didn’t stop the ride though to charge me what the ride actually costs.
41 Minutes later & I finally arrived to Ferrari World.
My ride turned out to be (at the time) before my dispute 80 AED (Way more than what it should have cost).
Now, you may notice my star rating that I gave the driver and this was my first time giving a driver a ONE STAR rating and it was tough to give but I had to. Not only was his treatment extremely rude and disrespectful but also his driving skills throughout the drive were extremely dangerous, at times he wasn’t even looking at the road – He was looking down on his phone putting my life in danger. What trigged me to give a one star rating? He also wouldn’t listen my instructions about where he needed to go, rather he was driving in circles in a deserted area.
HOW TO DISPUTE & HAVE UBER FIX THE CHARGES
In the past, I have had Uber fix a lot of my rides due to drivers not doing their job correctly and taking me the “long route” so they can cash in some more. That is why I highly recommend doing a “Fare Estimate” before you request the ride that way you are aware and know how much the ride will cost you before hand. Shortly after I got out of the car I went into my Uber app and proceeded to file a complain and within minutes the team at Uber credited my money back into my account and adjusted the fare to what it should have cost and here is how you do it.
Open your Uber app
Once you have clicked “Help” all of your previews rides will show up, you will then select the ride that you need help on and the following screen will pop up and you will select “I had an Issue with my Fare” or “I had an issue with my driver”. Either or will be fine.
It doesn’t take very long for Uber to respond to the dispute charges so just be patient when sending an email about fare charges. This pretty much sums up my experience with Uber in Abu Dhabi – While I had some good rides, this is one by far was the worst of all rides, unsafe, not a friendly driver, being driven all around town and getting charged way more than what I was suppose to. My tip here is to also make sure the destination you select has a name instead of being “unnamed” though keep in mind at the time of selecting my destination it showed up to be “Ferrari World” and once requested, it changed to “Unnamed” so it could be a glitch on the Uber system as well.
Have you taken Uber somewhere else before? If so, how was your experience like?
