Greetings to all from Abu Dhabi.
Safari tours in the Middle East are common, in-fact it is one of the most requested attractions that visitors are willing to do when they first come to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Being that it’s one of the most popular attraction to do here, I made it a priority to review the safari for you all to benefit from and get a feel for what is like and what to expect from it. Throughout the month of June I had the great pleasure to do a safari tour in Dubai and now it’s time to see what the Abu Dhabi Safari is about.
First thing first, I would like to thank the team at Le Meridien Abu Dhabi and Sunshine Tours for sponsoring this attraction for me to review the service and share the experience with the readers and followers of TravelsByJC. So without further a due, lets begin. I will be sharing the highlights of the safari and what makes this experience unique on its own way as it felt like an adrenaline rush safari adventure.
SUNSHINE TOURS 4X4 Vehicle
I was picked up at the hotel at 4:00 in the afternoon. Shortly after the drive took about 1 hour from Abu Dhabi to the dessert. The views were great along the way and we arrived on time to meet the rest of the group that would be joining us on the safari adventure. You may be wondering why the 4×4 Land Cruiser? On this type of safari Dune Bashing is the first thing you will be doing, for the next 45 minutes of the tour. When we arrived to the dessert, they were getting the tires ready to go so we wouldn’t get stuck while driving around.
Beginning the Safari Adventure
Without question, buckle up your seatbelt for your own safety and protection. One thing I noticed from the Abu Dhabi dessert its that its much more different than the one in Dubai. The color of it is lighter and much more sandy. The one in Dubai was bright red/orange and much thicker, though the views throughout the ride were beautiful.
Throughout the course. One thing I noticed, my driver was excellent and he knew what he was doing. His driving skills were on point while keeping us all aboard safe and sound. Dun bashing if done right, there is no danger. I felt completely fine here and was truly enjoying the ride. The 4×4 has handles around the car for you to grab on which I highly recommend so you don’t hit your head on the ceiling of the car.
Watching the other land cruisers performing their dune bashing. It is surreal being up that high on a dune and then coming down. It looks even crazier from a far and it was truly an adrenaline rush moment throughout the dune bashing.
Throughout the dune bashing the drivers will stop around different sections of the dessert for the guest to take photos. The scenery was beautiful and sunset was soon to be coming which made the dessert looking darker. You are able to take photos, walk around the dessert for a few before we continue on with the dune bashing. The drivers are happily willing to help take photos for the guest.
After the dune bashing, we made our way to the camp where you will be able to do a variety of things which I will soon be disclosing. Upon arrival you are greeted with arabic coffee and dates. The arabic coffee is pretty good and I encourage you all to try it, at least once ;). Dates are good for the digestive system and also very tasty, so don’t miss the opportunity of eating dates.
Abu Dhabi Safari – Camp area
The Camp Highlights
- You will be able to go Sand Boarding. They offer the boards at no cost for the guest to experience what sand boarding is about.
- Camel rides. Typical in a Safari Tour in the UAE you will have the opportunity to take photos with camels and ride them.
- For the ladies, you will be able to get a henna tattoo done by a local. Henna tattoos is part of the culture here and its a good way for you to experience on how they do it.
- Refreshments are being offered for the guest such as: Water, sodas and tea.
- Normally, belly dancing is also part of the safari adventure, though on this particular trip the belly dancing was cancelled due to the recent news here in the UAE. So to pay their respect, belly dancing was cancelled during my visit.
Throughout your time at the camp you can also see the delicious being cooked which is an arabic barbecue with a feast of food being offered. As expected, the food was outstanding and so fresh. A mix of kabobs, hummus, pita bread, rice, pasta and more was offered for the guest. Truly delicious and do not pass on trying every single dish, you won’t regret it.
Shortly after dinner you are able to enjoy shisha if you would like, shisha is also known as hookah. Though I passed on the offer and simply relaxed in the camp area meeting the locals and enjoying the atmosphere. Within 20 minutes or so, they turned off the lights of the camp so we could see the stars and it was simply incredible. You can see them perfectly and so bright. Stargazing in the Abu Dhabi dessert is a bucket list item and you will be able to experience it.
Sunshine Tours – Safari Overall experience
This was definitely a new experience for me in ways of seeing and exploring the dessert in the Middle East. It is certainly different than the one I did in Dubai. Both safari offer a unique way to show you the dessert with different amenities, installations being offered for the visitor. I felt like the Abu Dhabi safari was geared to those seeking a more adventure / adrenaline rush feel and the activities being offered at the camp were also unique, one of them being the sand boarding which for some, its a bucket list item to scratch. Overall, I enjoyed it and happy that now I am able to see whats different from the Dubai and Abu Dhabi dessert. At the end of the day it is a personal choice on what you’re willing to experience, the more luxury safari or the more “hardcore” safari.
