The travel industry throughout the past few months have been exciting, innovating and drastic in some ways. As a frequent flyer, it is hard to grasp the recent changes happening within the industry but it’s also exciting to see the latest projects and innovations come into play and taking shape for the new year. One of my favorite departments to cover it’s airline products and covering the latest news happening within the industry, so I am able to keep you all in the loop of things and have the first hand experience with the product. You may see the photos online, but can you really tell up-close what the product offers? Chances are, no. By the title of this post you may be aware that Singapore Airlines has introduced a new on board product known as Premium Economy and the news have been circulating the net quite a bit so without hesitation I attended the Travel Massive event at The London West Hollywood Hotel where I was able to get a close up look at the product, talk to Singapore Airline Executives and getting the inside scoop on the latest plans for the Airline and the investment they are making its quite big, Singapore Airlines invested $80 Million dollars to launch its new Premium Economy.
I’ve flown several Premium Economy products like British Airways and Cathay Pacific, but when I saw Singapore’s product I thought they nailed it. The design and overall amenities/features that the seat will be offering for the guest are stellar. The color combination and design it’s also very nice, sleek and different from other carriers. Some of the perks you will get as a Premium Economy passenger are great and this is a great investment to make for those flying Singapore on a long haul flight, though it will also be operating a rather short flight like Tokyo to Singapore at 6 hours once airborne.
So what are some of the benefits and privileges you will be getting when booking Premium Economy? Lets begin!
SINGAPORE AIRLINES – PREMIUM ECONOMY PERKS
The benefits are pretty standard when flying other than Economy Class so it’s not something to really rave about but it’s worth noting that your travel experience will be much better when flying this cabin. One of the privileges that struck me the most was “Earn KrisFlyer miles at 110% of the actual miles flown”. Earning more miles it’s always an incredible perk as you can redeem those for travel or to bump up to another cabin of service, assuming a miles+copay it’s offered.
As far as the on board experience you will also be in for a treat on what you are able to expect. Again, one that struck me the most out of the below list is the “Book The Cook Service”. If you have flown Premium Cabin on Singapore Airlines in the past, I am guessing this is one of your favorite choices offered to you, the traveler. Book The Cook simply means you will be able to order your meal up to 24 hours before departure from the 3 choices of main courses. It is a great feature and it’s something I always do when flying premium cabin, assuring I get my meal of choice, how I want it.
Where comfort and convenience meets contemporary, the new Premium Economy seat is thoughtfully designed for the discerning traveller.
As I mentioned earlier, the seat itself is sleek and the design of it it’s nice. The color combination of grey and orange is fantastic as well, as it’s one of my favorite color combinations. After seeing the seat in person several times and then seeing it in person, it is indeed a fairly good size seat in which you will definitely be very comfortable throughout your journey. This product will be on the following aircrafts for Singapore: The A380, A350, Boeing 777-300 and 777-200 on a 2-4-2 seat configuration. I was told at the event that the seats aren’t as close from one another as it is displayed below you will have a lot more room from the passenger next to you. On their Boeing 777-300ER you will find 28 seats while on their A380 you will find a total of 36 seats.
Premium Economy Seat stats
- 38 inch seat pitch
- Seat width 19.5 for their Airbus A380 and 18.5 for their 777-300ER.
- 8 inch recline (quite good)
Each spacious seat is upholstered fully in leather and equipped with an adjustable winged head rest, calf-rest and foot-rest. Ease into superior lounging comfort as you recline the seat.
The head rest of the seat is better than any other economy or premium economy products I’ve flown in the past, it actually offers some great cushion and support and it is also adjustable, keeping your head snuggled within the head rest.
On the side of your seat you will be able to find an adjustable reading lamp which is a nice touch.
On the bottom of the seat where the seatbelt is located you will find your personal remote to control your on board entertainment along with the buttons to recline your seat and unlock the calves and foot rest.
I love the feature they did for the water holder, a variety of airlines don’t really offer this touch shown below so it makes things convenient and easy for the passenger. Right next to the water holder you will find a charging port to plug in any of your devices such as laptops, cameras, cell phone, etc.
And if it wasn’t enough, you will have two ways to charge your devices as well and thats by the USB port found right within your seat along with the headphone port. I love the design and how simple they made it for the passenger to connect and access their devices.
The Entertainment – Via Singapore Airlines

With active noise cancelling headphones, be entertained in crystal clear sound on our flights as you choose from more than 1,000 on-demand options to enjoy, using the touchscreen handsets.
THE CULINARY PLEASURES
They will be offering a variety of exquisite food and beverages, from Singapore and Asian flavours, to International classics. You may book your meal from a selection^ of specially created dishes through the Premium Economy Book the Cook service before you fly. You will also be able to enjoy a coupe de Champagne or two, or take your pick from a wide range of beverages.
Throughout the event I was also able to meet the friendly cabin crew who walked me through the seat features and they were excited on the product release. This is a big step for Singapore Airlines as this will make their leading carrier much more competitive with the rest of the carriers within Asia. I asked one of the executives from Singapore the following question: “Will passengers flying economy have the opportunity to upgrade to Premium Economy”? His reply was “Great question, we haven’t thought about that yet – we are planning to sell this seats as much as we can, but thats something to consider in the near future”. Keep in mind, that if I was you – I would book Premium Economy over Economy any day, at the end of the day what the upgrade will cost you will be the difference on airfare so making the investment from the start it is a better choice here. However; lets say that Singapore Airlines will offer a miles+copay upgrade, that will also be a great way to upgrade at a lower cost though time will tell.
NO DETAIL IS TOO SMALL
Travel videos fascinate me and they are many airlines out there who have done some brilliant marketing campaigns to promote their latest innovations but with all honesty, Singapore Airlines have blown me away with their latest video which again, it has been circulating the net since it’s released. I am a fan of airlines who create campaigns or videos that nobody has done before and this is where they set the tone with their on board product, something that never has never been done before until now.
Throughout the event I was able to meet the man behind the scenes who created the video above. His name is Luca and it took him 6 months to conclude the project and what an outstanding job he did. Kudos my friend and a pleasure to meet you.
SINGAPORE AIRLINES PREMIUM ECONOMY – BOTTOM LINE
As the new year approaches, I have a new objective within my travels and thats going to be to fly new carriers who are featuring a new on board product. I will become more of a “Free agent” and fly airlines that I haven’t had the chance to fly in the past. Singapore will be one of them that I will be flying specially as an Asia fanatic. One of the flights I’ve got my eye on will be the Tokyo to Singapore flight clocked in at 6 hours once airborne and perhaps a long haul flight on their suites or business class cabin.
Without a doubt, the new on board product for Singapore is beautiful, well designed and it will certainly make an impact within the industry allowing the business and leisure flyer to travel in comfort and in style. What do you say?
